I grew up chubby and unathletic. I didn’t play any sports and lacked hand eye coordination.

During college, I forcibly went to the gym with friends and quickly became embarrassed. I spent 45 minutes on the elliptical all the while observing the “fit” people around me.

It’s been 20 years and I can finally say I know what works for me.

Here are the lessons I’ve learned through my journey.

Water, water, water and more water.

Everyone tells you to drink more water. It’s not new advice. But for those of us who don’t drink it, we nod our heads and continue to drink Diet Coke. We opt for seltzer instead thinking it has the same benefits as water.

It doesn’t.

A year ago, I started drinking a gallon of water a day. The adjustment was harder than expected. I learned to stop drinking water by 6pm after many nights of getting up every hour to pee. I learned to stay close to the bathroom because of how many times I’d need it.

I purchased a motivational gallon water bottle from Amazon to keep me going. I don’t pay much attention to the messaging anymore, I now know I need to slowly count to 20 every time I drink so…
